How I work

I optimize for the team that inherits the system

A stronger framework is the wrong choice when nobody on the team has used it. On the monitoring platform I put the 3D view in Angular for that reason, and paid for it in adapters and in patterns I had to re-derive.

Dependencies set the order of work

The convenient sequence and the correct one are rarely the same. On the university migration the operating system could not move until the application had, so the application went first, on an OS already past end of life.

Records that cannot be regenerated are a constraint, not a detail

When a certificate plugin was discontinued, the certificates it had issued still had to exist. That decided the shape of the migration before any of the version steps were planned.

A tradeoff that is not written down gets rediscovered

When I take the weaker option I record what it cost and where the cost will show up. The next person to touch it does not have to reconstruct the reasoning from the code.
